Washington, DC welcomes FIFA as candidate host city of World Cup 2026™
On Sunday, September 19, 2021, a delegation from FIFA will visit Washington, DC to evaluate potential venues for the FIFA World Cup 2026™. The visit will include a private press event (details below) for interested media featuring representatives from FIFA and the DC2026 team. This is a key step in selecting the best venues for the games with a view to finalizing this highly competitive selection process by Q1/Q2 2022.
Washington, DC, is bidding to host its fourth FIFA World Cup™ Games, the most of any US bid city, and will look to make history through these games. Often referred to as America’s “soccer capital,” DC has hosted more US National team games than any other site in the world and has been the venue for countless international matches and career moments from some of the game’s biggest superstars. During the FIFA site visit next week, DC will unveil its vision for the 2026 FIFA FanFest™, which will be located on the historic National Mall, and will be the largest FIFA FanFest™ in FIFA World Cup™ history. The FIFA FanFest™ will break more records on July 4, 2026, when the US will celebrate its 250th birthday on the Mall in conjunction with the FIFA FanFest™. City officials estimate there will be over 1 million attendees, making it the largest attended event in FIFA history.
The FIFA delegation will tour various sites around the city, where key events would be hosted, including FedExField and the National Mall. The tour will conclude with lunch and the round table media event at the International Spy Museum.
