How Tim Harris built a Black-owned $400 million company

In business, few stories exemplify perseverance, vision, and determination. As the founder and president of Harris & Ford LLC, a leading chemical distribution company in Indianapolis, Indiana, in the United States, Timothy M. Harris with his humble beginning, transformed his vision into a thriving $400 million Black-owned company.

When Harris co-founded Harris & Ford LLC, in 1994, alongside Joe Ford and Chris LaMothe, the industry landscape was vastly different. Large corporations dominated chemical distribution, leaving little room for newcomers—especially minority-owned businesses.

However, Harris was undeterred. According to Harris, he began his company in an office with just two pieces of “furniture” which were the empty paint buckets that painters had left behind. Rather than being discouraged by the odds, Harris focused on building relationships, credibility, and operational excellence. He knew that securing contracts and gaining the trust of major clients would take time, but he remained steadfast in his mission.

With a background in chemical engineering and a sharp business mindset, he saw an opportunity to bridge the gap in supply chain distribution, particularly in industries like food, personal care, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, water or wastewater management, and industrial customers. His company also provides warehouse space rental and shipping services, including truckload and third-party shipping options.

Harris & Ford’s growth did not happen overnight. In its early years, the company navigated capital challenges, industry biases, and logistical hurdles. However, through strategic partnerships, an unwavering commitment to customer service, and a reputation for reliability, the company began to expand.

“We believe in adding measurable value, providing result-oriented solutions, and exceeding customer expectations. Harris & Ford is a company founded upon and focused on providing our customers with the highest standard of service in our industry,” said Harris & Ford LLC in a statement.

One of Harris’ most remarkable achievements was securing long-term supply chain agreements with major corporations, allowing his company to scale operations both nationally and internationally. Today, Harris & Ford operates in over 50 countries with a network of global warehouses, ensuring seamless distribution of chemicals and ingredients across multiple industries.

For Black entrepreneurs, breaking into industries with historically low minority representation can be daunting. Harris understands the challenges of navigating a system where access to capital and opportunities is often limited. However, he turned obstacles into stepping stones by focusing on excellence, integrity, and innovation.

His company’s Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) certification has played a pivotal role in opening doors, but Harris emphasizes that success is not just about certifications—it’s about delivering results. By consistently exceeding client expectations, Harris & Ford has earned the trust of Fortune 500 companies, proving that Black-owned businesses can thrive in competitive, high-revenue industries.

Beyond business, Harris is committed to uplifting others. As a mentor and advocate for minority entrepreneurship, he encourages young Black business leaders to dream big, remain persistent, and build networks that support their growth. He frequently describes how his story is proof that Black entrepreneurs can break barriers and dominate industries traditionally out of reach.

As Harris & Ford continues to expand, its success serves as a powerful reminder, that Black-owned businesses are not just capable of thriving—they are capable of leading the future of global industries.

“Our consistent growth and success is testimony to the experience and commitment of our founders. With more than 60 years of combined experience in chemicals, Harris & Ford is well respected for the vision, integrity, and proficiency it brings to the distribution business,” the company emphasized.
