Tems wins 2nd Grammy for ‘Best African Music Performance’
Nigerian artist, Tems, has won her second Grammy Award at the 67th Grammy Awards’ Best African Music Performance category with her song “Love Me JeJe.” The Grammy Awards was aired live from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California, in the United States.
She edged out Burna Boy’s “Higher,” Asake’s “MMS” starring Wizkid, Chris Brown’s “Sensational” featuring Davido and Lojay, and Yemi Alade’s “Tomorrow,” to become the only African that won a Grammy Award in 2025. South Africa’s Tyla took home the award for her 2024 hit song, “Water,” in the inaugural edition of the category.
Tem’s “Love Me JeJe” referenced the well-known 1997 hit by Nigerian singer-songwriter Seyi Sodimu. The song peaked at No. 3 on Billboard’s US Afrobeats Songs and No. 1 on the UK Afrobeats Chart.
She cleverly bridged old African pop legends with modern global sounds with the song, debuting it during her 2024 Coachella appearance.
Tems won her first Grammy in 2023 for her contribution to the 2022 hit song by Future, “Wait for U,” which also features Drake, under the category of “Best Melodic Rap Performance.”
Her album “Born in the Wild” was nominated for Best Global Music Album at this year’s Grammy alongside a countryman, Rema for his album “Heis,” and other international artists such as Matt B and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Other African artists like Angélique Kidjo for her song “Sunlight to My Soul,” featuring Soweto Gospel Choir; and Rocky Dawuni for his song “Rise” were also nominees for the Best Global Music Performance category, showcasing the growing influence of African artists on the global stage.
Representing TheAfricanDream.net, Oral Ofori virtually covered the red carpet event, which can be streamed on Facebook, TikTok, and X. He interviewed 4-time Grammy-nominee Rocky Dawuni on the 67th Grammy Awards red carpet.
