Tems’ BET Award for Best International Act 2022 is Historic
Temilade Openiyi, better known by her stage name Tems, won Best International Act at this year’s 2022 BET Awards. The award made her the first female musician from Nigeria to win the Best International Act category at the BET Awards.
She won the award after edging Fireboy DML from Nigeria, Dave Dinos from France, Fally Ipupa from Congo, Little Simz from the UK, Ludmilla from Brazil, Tayo (France) and Major League Djz from South Africa to win the award.
The recognition came two weeks after she received a Reflux Laryngitis diagnosis, a condition in which acid or other substances from your stomach irritate the back of your throat.
She also got another award for “Essence” featuring Wizkid & Justin Bieber under the “Best Collaboration” category. Wizkid also made history becoming the African artist with the most BET awards. However, The Weeknd defeated Wizkid in the competition for “Best male R&B/Pop Artist.”
Influential figures from every corner of the entertainment industry were present for the 22nd annual Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards ceremony, which was held on Sunday night, June 26, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, hosted by Taraji P. Henson.
The Awards is an epic celebration of Black culture and achievement in music, cinema, television, literature and sports that have had the greatest cultural effect in the previous year.
“It’s an honour. I mean, this is the first award show that I’m winning. I want to use this as an opportunity to speak to every single young, old, whatever, every single woman watching this, every single girl watching this at home where I’m from, things like this don’t happen,” Tems said while receiving the award.
Tems has appeared on the albums of international superstars like Drake and Future after receiving positive feedback from fans all around the world and a Grammy nomination for his song “Essence.”
