Starlink satellite approved for Ghana’s launch

Elon Musk’s satellite internet company, Starlink, is expected to officially launch its services in Ghana by the end of August 2024. It will operate in Ghana under the name Space X Starlink GH LTD.

The National Communications Authority (NCA), Ghana’s telecommunications regulatory body had initially approved Starlink’s request to operate in Ghana earlier this year. However, the company defaulted in additional mandatory requirements for commencing business in the country.

With hurdles now cleared, Starlink is prepared to bring its high-speed internet services to the West African country. Its satellite-based technology promises to reach remote and underserved areas, bridging the digital divide and unlocking new opportunities for economic growth and development.

The development marks a significant boost for Starlink’s footprint in Africa, where it has already launched services in several countries. The satellite service’s first launch in Africa was in February 2023 in Nigeria.

A month later, it launched in Rwanda, then over the next 9 months in seven other countries that included Mozambique, Kenya, Malawi, Zambia, Benin, and Eswatini. Additionally, Starlink has plans to expand to several other African countries in 2024, including Angola, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Starlink’s pioneering satellite internet service raises hopes of transforming Africa’s digital landscape with its super speed. However, telecom analysts have sounded a note of caution, warning that the cutting-edge technology may come with a hefty price tag.

The cost of Starlink hardware is expected to range from $600 to $2,500, depending on the type of service. This initial cost is just the beginning, as monthly subscription fees could vary from $120 to a staggering $5,000, again depending on the service package.

While the costs may be prohibitive for some, Starlink’s services have the potential to transform the way people live, work, and communicate, making it an exciting development in telecoms. The project is also putting remote and underserved areas in plans, to unlock new opportunities for growth and innovation.
