AFCON Champions: Senegal President Awards National Team $87,000 each & Plots of Land.
Following the national football team’s weekend victory in the African Cup of Nations, Senegal’s President Macky Sall presented cash prizes and land plots to the players on Tuesday, according to AFP reporters.
He announced a prize of $87,000 for each team member, as well as a 200-square-metre (2,100-square-foot) plot of property in Dakar and a 500-square-metre (5,400-square-foot) plot in Diamniadio, a nearby city.
Thousands of supporters rejoiced outside the gates of the presidential palace in Dakar, where he also nominated team members to the West African country’s famous Order of the Lion.
“By your vital force and your creative genius, you have reversed the course of history. We dreamed of the cup, you built this dream and you made it come true.”
President Macky said, standing on a podium beside the Cup of Nations trophy.

Senegal defeated Egypt 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out in the Cameroon final on Sunday, led by Liverpool’s Sadio Mane. After extra time, the game remained goalless. Senegal’s first victory in the tournament after more than fifty years of fielding teams triggered euphoric celebrations around Dakar on Sunday.
Hundreds of thousands of jubilant fans crowded the streets of the three-million-strong city on Monday, a national holiday declared by the government, to welcome the squad home from Cameroon.
“There are no words to express you to our pride, our joy and our gratitude,” Sall said.
