Nigerian governor appoints aide for divorced women
There is some level of surprise among Nigerians after Governor of Nigeria’s Bauchi state, Bala Mohammed appointed a new aide to take care of divorced women.
Mohammed appointed Balaraba Ibrahim as “Special Assistant to the governor on Women Affairs (Divorced)”.
Her appointment letter which surfaced on social media has gotten many talking.
Ms Ibrahim, a divorcee herself, in her new role will have to ensure that mass-weddings are helped for divorced women and also support their business ideas.
She had previously headed the association of divorced women in Bauchi state where she has organised meetings and programmes for them.- Advertisement
According to the BBC reporting divorce rates are high in northern Nigeria.
A husband only has to write “I divorce you”, three times on paper to end a marriage.
The BBC quotes the governor’s spokesman, Mukhtar Gidado, as saying that the appointment was copied from neighbouring Kano state where there is a similar role.
“The idea is for the government to assist them in arranging marriages,” he told the BBC.
It is not known yet if the Bauchi state governor will also appoint aides for graveyard and streetlight matters just like was done in Kano.
In 2017 a governor in the eastern state of Imo also created the ministry of happiness and purpose fulfilment. He subsequently appointed his sister to the role.
