Iran issues arrest warrant for Trump, seeks Interpol’s help
An arrest warrant has been issued for U.S. President Donald Trump and 35 others over the killing of top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.
Iran’s prosecutor Ali Alqasimehr announced the issuance of the warrant on Monday and asked Interpol for help.
The Fars news agency reported that the warrants were issued on charges of murder and terrorist action.
Ali Alqasimehr said Iran had asked Interpol to issue a “red notice” for Trump and the other individuals the Islamic Republic accuses of taking part in the killing of Soleimani.
The United States killed general Soleimani who was the leader of the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force on January 3 this year.
The attack was carried out with a drone with Washington justifying the killing saying Soleimani masterminded attacks by Iranian-aligned militias on U.S. forces in the region.
Apart from the warrant for Trump, Alqasimehr said others also wanted for the killing included other U.S. military and civilian officials.
The Iranian government said it would continue to pursue the matter even after Trump leaves office.
The killing of the Iranian general nearly sparked a war between the United States and Iran early this year.
Iran though retaliated by firing missiles at American targets in Iraq several days after general Soleimani was killed.
