Installation of MARCUS GARVEY Sculpture at African Union HQ in Ethiopia
| Toronto, Canada, March 18th 2020 — Afroglobal Television, the 24-hour network that is based in Canada, has teamed up with the Marcus Garvey Institute under the leadership of its Co-Founder, Chairman and son of the legendary Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Dr. Julius Garvey, along with the Pan African Technical Association, Strictly Roots, National Association of Kawaida Organizations, The Whirlwind Group, and renowned Los Angeles, USA artist Nijel Binns, to create the Marcus Garvey bronze bust. The bronze sculpture honours Marcus Mosiah Garvey, who along with Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana and others, are hailed as fathers of Pan-Africanism, the global movement for solidarity and success of people of African descent. Garvey, who called for a United States of Africa in the 1920’s and went on to create the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA & ACL), continues to inspire subsequent leaders. “The sculpture will enshrine my father’s legacy at the African Union headquarters, demonstrate the importance of the Diaspora as the sixth region of the African Union, and inspire Africa and our worldwide descendants, with his vision of unity and unbridled prosperity,” says Dr. Julius Garvey, a vascular surgeon in New York. The statue is to be completed, delivered and installed at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia by August 17, 2021, the 134th birthday of Marcus Garvey. Headquartered in Harlem, New York, the organization had hundreds of properties and businesses, while simultaneously engaging in the local, national and international political and social advancement of African people. Garvey, who became Jamaica’s First National Hero, has a similar bust in the Hall of Heroes of the Organization of American States in Washington, D.C. “We are looking forward to documenting and promoting the sculpture project as a symbol of inspiration for present and future generations of the people of Africa and the Diaspora,” says Moses A. Mawa, President & CEO of Afroglobal Television, Silvertrust Media, and Co-Founder of the Marcus Garvey Institute, which is incorporated in Canada. “Having the statue at the African Union, where policies are promulgated and transformational initiatives are initiated for the benefit of all people of African descent around the world, is profoundly significant,” he says. The parents of Malcolm X were active members of Garvey’s organization and he influenced many other leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Dr. Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana and Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, thereby advancing the civil rights movement and the independence movement in Africa. Because of his powerful influence, Garvey was targeted, scrutinized, his organization infiltrated and marked for destruction by J. Edgar Hoover, founder of America’s Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The family and supporters of Marcus Garvey’s illustrious legacy continue to call for his exoneration, after his malicious and unfounded recrimination in the United States. “All Pan-African people and well wishers of African unity are encouraged to contribute revenue to the cost of completing, transporting the statue from the United States, and installing it in Ethiopia,” says Michael Dawson, President of The Whirlwind Group, Strictly Roots and Co-Founder of the Marcus Garvey Institute.
