General Brice Nguema wins Gabon’s presidential elections by landslide

General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has been officially declared the winner of Gabon’s presidential election, securing an overwhelming 90.35% of the vote.

The announcement, delivered on national television, marked a defining moment in the nation’s political history, and a major milestone in Nguema’s leadership journey.

The election saw an impressive 87.21% turnout among the roughly 920,000 registered voters, including over 28,000 Gabonese citizens living abroad. With ballots cast across more than 3,000 polling stations, the strong participation reflected a sense of hope and civic duty, as many sought to shape a new era for Gabon.

Nguema outpaced seven other candidates, including former Prime Minister Alain Claude Bilie-By-Nze, who garnered just 3% of the vote. The scale of the victory indicates a clear mandate from the people, many of whom view Nguema as a unifying figure and a symbol of renewal in a country long dominated by a single ruling family.

“Elected with an absolute majority, with 575,222 votes, or 90.35%, Mr. Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. Thank you,” said Interior Minister Hermann Immongault, who also serves as head of the electoral commission.

Before assuming national leadership, Nguema served as the head of the Republican Guard, a key unit responsible for protecting state institutions. He stepped into an interim presidency in 2023 following a major political shift that ended more than five decades of rule by the Bongo family. While his initial rise to power came under exceptional circumstances, many citizens saw the moment as an opportunity for fresh leadership.

Critics of the previous regime had long accused it of mismanaging the country’s vast oil wealth while failing to lift the general population out of poverty. Nguema’s emergence was met with cautious optimism, as many hoped for a leader who could chart a more inclusive and transparent path forward.

With the backing of a decisive majority, Nguema now faces the challenge of translating political support into real progress. Expectations are high, but so is the hope. As Gabon turns a new page, many are watching closely — not just for change in leadership but for real transformation.
