Biden names delegation to Ghana to attend Mahama’s inauguration

President of the United States of America (USA), Joseph R. Biden, Jr. has announced the designation of a presidential delegation to attend the inauguration of Ghana’s president-elect, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama on January 7, 2025, in Accra.

The Honourable Shalanda D. Young, Director of the United States Office of Management and Budget, will lead the delegation. Mahama’s swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at Black Star Square, in the heart of the national capital, Accra.

Other members of the presidential delegation include, the Honourable Virginia E. Palmer, United States Ambassador to the Republic of Ghana; the Honourable Karen Bass, Mayor of Los Angeles, California; and the Honourable Frances Z. Brown, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs, National Security Council, The White House.

Last year, the former president of Ghana emerged victorious in a historic comeback election, presumably punishing the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its handling of the economic crisis.

After failing to overcome popular dissatisfaction with the high cost of living, Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice presidential candidate for the NPP, admitted a loss in the weekend presidential election on December 7.

The election also made history, with Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on the course of making history as the first female vice president of Ghana. Her influence, especially in significant areas like the Central Region and Greater Accra, has been crucial to her party’s popularity.

The appointment is regarded as a significant turning point for gender representation and inclusivity in Ghanaian politics as she gets ready to assume office.

Following his victory, Mahama pledged to change the nation’s economic situation, emphasizing the creation of jobs through his 24-hour economy program. He promised to empower women by creating a ‘Women Development Bank’ that would provide low-interest loans to help women-owned enterprises.

He has also pledged to improve the nation’s educational system and lower the cost of postsecondary education for disadvantaged groups.
