Barbados leader Mia Mottley asks Africa and the Caribbean to unite

In her February 15 address to the African Union (AU) this year, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley called for a united front between Africa and the Caribbean, emphasizing the need for economic justice, reparations, and deeper integration between the two regions.

Mottley’s address was a rallying cry for African and Caribbean leaders to seize their moment in history. With Africa expected to account for a quarter of the global population by 2050, she stressed the moral imperative for unity. The Prime Minister’s words echoed the spirit of the 1896 Battle of Adwa, where Ethiopia defied European colonial ambitions, inspiring the people of Africa and the Caribbean.

As Chair of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Mottley announced plans to strengthen African-Caribbean ties, including the first in-person CARICOM-AU Summit in Addis Ababa this September. Barbados will also host the 15th Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) in August, celebrating shared culture, music, food, and philosophy with African nations.
