African Union Condemns Russia’s Attack on Ukraine
The African Union (AU) criticized Russia’s attack on Ukraine on Thursday, February 24, at the 35th Ordinary Session of the AU Summit in Addis Ababa. They demanded an “immediate ceasefire,” in Ukraine warning that the crisis may escalate into “a planetary conflict.”
The current chair of the union, Senegalese President Macky Sall, and the chair of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, stated in a joint statement that the invasion was “extremely concerning.”
They also demanded that Russia respect international law, Ukraine’s territorial integrity, and national sovereignty.

On Thursday, Russia started a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, killing scores of people as warplanes attacked military targets and ground soldiers poured in from the north, south, and east.
The extremely critical and hazardous situation, according to the AU leaders, should be handled through political dialogue mediated by the UN.
