Babatunde Ogunjimi appointed Nigeria’s Accountant General

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has appointed Shamsedeen Babatunde Ogunjimi as the new Accountant General of the Federation, following a “rigorous and merit-based selection process.”
His appointment will take effect on March 7, the day incumbent Oluwatoyin Madehin is scheduled to retire, according to a statement released on Tuesday, March 4, by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. The 57-year-old was initially named acting Accountant General of the Federation on 10 December 2024.
Ogunjimi, a fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, was chosen after a selection process involving written assessments, ICT proficiency tests, and oral interviews.
According to the Onanuga, the president’s choice demonstrates his administration’s dedication to openness, quality, and proficiency in important public sector appointments. Ogunjimi’s appointment is expected to enhance government finance management’s efficiency and fiscal responsibility, in keeping with the administration’s commitment to economic reform and good governance.
Ogunjimi holds a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and a Master’s in Accounting and Finance from the University of Lagos. After starting his career as an accountant in the commercial sector, Ogunjimi joined the public sector in 2000 and advanced through the ranks of several government agencies. He held significant financial positions for more than 20 years.
These included Head of Accounts at the Nigerian Copyright Commission, Chief Internal Auditor at the Nigerian Navy Headquarters, and senior roles at the National Hajj Commission, the Nigerian Immigration Service, and the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs.
