Ghana Select Team claims Cup with 2-1 win over D.C. United

The Ghana Select Team defeated D.C. United 2-1 to claim the Capital City Africa Cup in an entertaining match at the Audi Field in Washington, D.C., in the United States, as a wrap-up event for Ghana Week DC 2024. The match was a consecutive one for Ghana with Medeama SC playing the inaugural cup last year.

The feature was initially between Asante Kotoko from the Ghanaian Premier League, and D.C. United U-18 team, but the Kumasi-based team withdrew from the match due to visa issues for some of its players.

However, seven players from Asante Kotoko’s main squad played with two selected players from Attram De Visser FC, together with Ghanaian players based in the U.S. The first half of the match started with an early lead from D.C. United, but Ghana’s tenacity paid off after Elvis Kyei Baffour equalized shortly before half-time.

Geoffrey Owusu sealed the Capital City Cup for Ghana select’s side after netting a goal in the second half. The match represented the cultural and economic ties between Ghana and the U.S., with a focus on their relationship through the diaspora.

It also marked the second edition of the Capital City Africa Cup, and part of a weeklong Ghana Week DC 2024 celebration organized to promote the rich culture, tourism, and investment potential of Ghana, held at the DMV region (Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia) of the United States.

Ghanaian fan Patrcia Ocansey in a post game interview told Oral Ofori of TheAfricanDream.net (who was at the match that “this game was a very exciting game. Despite the initial controversy surrounding the visa-acquisition for it in Ghana, but we are very happy for this win and we feel it is going to further cement this event as a formidable one on Washington DC’s annual activities’ calendar.”

Mrs. Ocansey indicated that most of her friends wanted to see more promoting done for such events because “we feel more Ghanaians and even Africans all over the United States [if they were aware] would have filled the stadium to capacity. That said, congratulations to the organizers and we’re looking forward to the 2025 edition” she concluded.

Ghana Week DC is hosted by the Ghana Tourism Authority, Liquid Soul DC, Events DC, and D.C. United, with the Capital City Africa Cup as its headliner. Other events included the Ghana Property and Lifestyle Expo, the opening reception at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, the Hospitality Travel & Tourism B2B Forum happened at the Embassy of Ghana DC, and the African Restaurant Week was also major part of the event.

The Ghana Week DC event strengthens the ties between Ghana and the U.S. annually by bringing together Americans, Ghanaians, and members of the African diaspora through activitirs like the ones above. It reaffirms the close ties that can be formed through events similar to it and competitions such as the Capital City Africa Cup.
