VOA Journalist Peter Clottey becomes a Ghanaian Chieftain
International Multi-Media Broadcaster-Journalist, Peter Clottey, has been adorned Chief Linguist to the Paramount Chief in Tsurekpe Tota of Vakpo Traditional area in the Volta Region of Ghana, following a ceremony in the last quarter of 2022.
As a Chief Linguist, Clottey occupies the highest position among non-royal court officials. His duties are extensive and include everything from judicial advocacy, political problem-solving, political mediation to preserving and interpreting royal history.
In addition, Mr. Clottey will serve as a liaison between the king and those who need to speak with him. Clottey was presented with a Linguist’s Stick at the November 2022 ceremony as a symbol of his position, which he needs to carry out his official obligations.
“I’m very familiar with the chieftaincy titles in Ghana. I’ve had the opportunity to know a few of the chiefs that are in Ghana. However, the whole thing is still new to me and very overwhelming, you know you don’t go to sleep one night and wake up one morning to be told that you’ve been made a chief, so yes it’s still new,” said Clottey in a conversation with TheAfricanDream.net a week after he started occupying the position.
“I am as overwhelmed as I’m really appreciative for the opportunity to serve the people of Vakpo and I look forward to doing the best we can, and receiving all the help I can from those who are in the position to be of assistance. It’s a great opportunity and also a great blessing, and I hope I leave a great legacy,” he added.
Clottey, as a broadcast journalist over the years has represented an influence in Washington D.C and Africa with his focus on Africa-related news.
He conducts interviews with presidents, vice presidents, prime ministers, members of the executive branch of government, rebel and insurgent leaders, and he reports on Africa’s political and economic news for the Voice of America.
On his magazine radio program, ‘One-on-One with Peter Clottey‘ on Nightline Africa, he highlights the latest issues and developments on the African continent. Correspondents from Washington and across Africa also offer in-depth interviews, analysis, and features on African arts and culture, sports, and music.
