Nigeria vs. Morocco set new attendance record at WAFCON 2022
The semi-finals of the ongoing 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco broke the continent’s record for most spectators per game.
The host Atlas Lionesses of Morocco defeated the defending champion Super Falcons of Nigeria to earn a spot in their maiden WAFCON finals appearance in front of a total of 45,562 spectators.
The final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) will feature South Africa and Morocco after the hosts defeated nine-woman Nigeria 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
Drama was abundant throughout the encounter on Monday at the Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca as nine-time champions Nigeria played the whole of the game with nine players.
The Falcons scored first in the 14th minute, and Halimatu Ayinde was dismissed in the 48th, but four minutes later, Morocco scored to tie the score.

In the 70th minute, Rasheedat Ajibade was also ejected, leaving Nigeria with nine players who needed to play strong defence to end regulation and overtime with the same score.
However, the home team prevailed 5-4 on penalties to go to Saturday’s championship game versus South Africa.
Despite the Falcons’ defeat, Nigeria joined Morocco, South Africa, and Zambia in qualifying for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which Australia and New Zealand will co-host.
