African Development Bank Gears up for 2022 Annual Meetings in Ghana

African Development Bank Group will host its 2022 Annual Meetings in Accra, Ghana. This year’s meetings, which will be in a hybrid format, will take place from 23 – 27 May at the Accra International Conference Center (AICC). It will mark a return to in-person meetings following virtual gatherings over the last two years.

The theme of the African Development Bank Group’s 2022 Annual Meetings is “Achieving Climate Resilience and a Just Energy Transition for Africa.” African leaders will discuss the nature of the support they need from global development partners, as well as the estimated cost of building resilience and a just energy transition for their economies.

The meetings are the Bank Group’s most important event of the year. They attract some 3,000 delegates, and bring together the Bank’s leadership and shareholders to take stock of the institution’s progress.

They also provide a unique forum for representatives of governments, businesses, civil society, think tanks, academia, and the media, to discuss critical issues concerning Africa’s development.

This year’s conference will be an occasion to assess the continent’s reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic and discuss how to increase immunisation rates.

It will also be distinguished by the mounting threat that the Ukraine crisis poses to Africa’s food security. Martin Fregene, the AfDB’s agriculture and agro-industry director, said at an online press conference aired on April 20 that Africa’s agricultural sector must be more resilient to external shocks like the war in Ukraine.

Regional member countries of the African Development Bank will also have the opportunity to debate the type of assistance they require from global development partners, as well as the estimated cost of building resilience and a just energy transition for their economies.

The bank provides knowledge sessions concentrating on policy topics that are critical for Africa’s growth every year during its Annual Meetings. After the ceremonial opening ceremony, they will hold a high-level presidential session to discuss how decision-makers might build a net-zero path for Africa’s development.

On the following days, three thematic knowledge events will be held. The first will focus on developing a digital economy to boost green economic growth and efficient infrastructure, bringing together entrepreneurs to examine how the continent may use digital banking and mobile banking initiatives in the next years.

The second event will focus on enhancing climate resilience in African agri-food systems. The last event will be a discussion on green jobs for young people and women in post-Covid Africa. The AfDB will look into prospects for green jobs for the most affected and vulnerable individuals in Africa, given the pandemic’s enormous impact on jobs.
