hapaSpace is the newest co-working hub in Kumasi
HapaSpace is a co-working space at the heart of Adum, a city in Kumasi; the Ashanti regional capital and second capital city of Ghana that was opened on February 1, 2016.
Co-working spaces have over the years become a thriving hub for startups, entrepreneurs and small businesses in the West African nation of Ghana. As part of encouraging intiative and creativity, Hapaweb Solutions; an IT company based in Kumasi opened the hapaSpace co-working space in the bustling township of Kumasi.
Around October 2014, Hapaweb was considering moving to the center of town in order to be more accessible to its clients. However, the startup could not afford the high rental cost at the time. The situation was compounded by the fact that other major cities in Ghana practiced the norm of collecting a down payment of between 5 to 10 years of rent in order to lease a property.
Albert Opoku, a co-founder of Hapaweb complained to Fiifi Baidoo, a Co-founder of iSpace, a popular co-working space in Ghana’s capital city; Accra, about the lack of a facility akin to iSpace in Kumasi that could provide a space for creative thinking and networking. Fiifi therefore suggested Hapaweb start one of their own in Kumasi. After almost two years of a long search for a suitable area, Hapaweb Solutions opened hapaSpace on February 1, 2016.
hapaSpace is located in the Dovewell building opposite the STC station in Adum. The Dovewell building is a prime estate which already houses banks, insurance companies, restaurants, a gym, a spa and the TV3 television network in Kumasi.
The new co-working space has office spaces for individuals, teams of twos and teams of fours as well as a meeting room, an eating area and a training or events space.
Albert Opoku, a co-founder of hapaSpace stated that the goal of the property is to “become more than just a space to work, but to build a physical community that provides IT startups, SMEs, Entrepreneurs and Social Enterprises relevant education, training and mentorship opportunities that are key to helping ideas and prototypes become viable products and services.”
Gideon Brefo, the Manager for hapaSpace added that the ultimate aim is to build a strong entrepreneurship hub in Kumasi — the ‘Garden city of Ghana.’
At the moment hapaSpace is home to Indego Africa – A USA based social enterprise, Tech-Prenuer – a web and mobile apps training startup, Modern Technologies limited – an early business company providing satellite internet services, The Neonatal Network Support System (NNSS) – a social entity using technology to save lives of newborn aged babies and Hapaweb Solutions – the founders of the co-working space.
Founders of the property invite all members of the public in the Kumasi metropolis or its visitors to stop by for a tour and the possibilty of influencing or being influnced by someone in the facility to create a positive life changing event.
