Wikipedia Ghana starts second photo project for 500 notable people in Ghana
Press release
Wikimedia Ghana User Group, a Ghanaian community of Wikipedia editors, has launched the second phase of its 500 Notable People Photo Project.
The project aims to collect and upload photos of notable people in Ghana who do not have their images available for use on Wikipedia yet. The project’s first phase, which started in 2021, collected about 275 photos of the Members of Ghana’s Parliament to be used on their Wikipedia articles.
This was done in collaboration with the Public Relations Department of the Parliament of Ghana, under the leadership of Mrs Kate Addo, the Head of Public Relations.
The newly launched phase two is set to photograph or curate photos of over 200 more notable Ghanaians for Wikipedia. Our team will take their pictures and upload them to Wikimedia Commons, a sister project of Wikipedia, where photos used on Wikipedia are kept.

Wikipedia is the seventh most visited website globally, with an average of about 66.90 billion visits in 2021 alone, according to the 2022 Global State of Digital Report released every year by Hootsuite and We Are Social.
Wikipedia volunteers around the world work together to keep knowledge free. They upload photos, fix typos, chase sources, write code, and start articles so that anyone can access free encyclopedic content.
Wikimedia Ghana User Group has been promoting Wikipedia and its sister wikis in Ghana, and for seven years, it has been running projects, recruiting, training and engaging Wikipedians.
