Gov’t declares August 4 public holiday to mark Founders’ Day
The Government of Ghana (GoG) has permitted the country to observe Wednesday, August 4, 2021, which marks Founders’ Day as a statutory public holiday, the Minister for Interior, Hon Ambrose Dery announced on Thursday.
“The general public is hereby informed that Wednesday, 4th August 2021 which marks Founders’ Day, is a statutory public holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” he said in a post sighted by EducationWeb.
Founders’ Day is a national public holiday observed to commemorate the contributions of all the people, notably the “Big Six who led the struggle for Ghana’s independence.
Founder’s Day now Founders’ Day with the letter “S” appearing before an apostrophe is celebrated to earmark the achievements of Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah and a member of the Big Six.
Dr Nkrumah was born on 21 September, hence, the “Founder’s” Day celebration on 21 September each year in honour of his bravery to save Ghana from the dictatorship rule by the British Governors of the Gold Coast.
Other members of the “Big Six” were Edward Akufo-Addo, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, William Ofori Atta, and Ebenezer Ako-Adjei.
There were several thoughts and realizations of the leaders of President Akufo Addo’s regime that other members of the “Big Six” who were part of the struggles for Ghana’s independence must be an honour as part of the celebration.
The name was changed from “Founder’s Day” to “Founders’ Day”. Meaning that the word is plural to include other members of the “Big Six” as part of Ghana’s “Founder’s Day” celebration and in honour of them.
