The City of Fredericksburg, in Virginia, south of Washington, D.C., in the United States (U.S.), has announced the second edition of ‘Fredericksburg-Ghana’s Friendship Day’ set for March 6 to celebrate the historic and important relationship between the City of Fredericksburg and the Republic of Ghana.
The event, which coincides with Ghana’s Independence Day, will hold from 12pm to 3pm (EST) at the Historic Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site) 801 Sophia St., Fredericksburg, VA 22401, with Africulture as a supporting partner.
The city anticipates that the ceremony will be attended by staff of the Ghana Embassy in Washington, D.C., Fredericksburg City Council officials, residents of Fredericksburg, Ghanaians in the Diaspora and friends of Ghana.
Fredericksburg officially announced ‘Fredericksburg-Ghana’s Friendship Day,’ at a ceremony on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, held at the St. George Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall in Fredericksburg, Commonwealth of Virginia.
The citation plaque was presented to Her Excellency Hajia Alima Mahama, the Ambassador of the Republic of Ghana to the United States, after Fredericksburg Mayor Kerry P. Devine read a proclamation from the City Council designating March 6th as Fredericksburg-Ghana’s Friendship Day.

The first edition recognized the historic relationship between Fredericksburg and Ghana over the centuries, including Fredericksburg’s Sister Relationship with Princes Town, Ahanta West Municipal Assembly in the Western Region of Ghana. The celebration included dancing, Ghanaian food, and fabric from Ghana.
“We invite you to join the City and residents of Fredericksburg, Africulture, citizens of Ghana and those of Ghanaian ancestry as we highlight the historic and important relationships we have had with Ghana over the centuries, including our new Sister Relationship with Princes Town, Ghana. Learn about the important and historical relationships and connections we have over centuries with various parts of Ghana and Fredericksburg, Virginia,” stated the City of Fredericksburg.
This year’s edition will follow the same line of events. Attendees will experience Ghanaian cultural exhibits, art, music, and delicious cuisine highlighting the diverse contributions Ghanaians have made over the years to enrich the City of Fredericksburg.
“All are invited for a day of peace, joy, celebration, and friendship as we acknowledge and commemorate this historic occasion with our Ghanaian friends and family,” added the City of Fredericksburg.
Ghana’s Embassy in Washington D.C., will be sending a high-powered delegation to the 2025 edition to celebrate the occasion which promises to be more dynamic this year, following the huge success of the inaugural Fredericksburg-Ghana Friendship Day.
